Osteoporosis is a disease of bones that leads to an increased risk of fracture. In osteoporosis the bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced, bone micro architecture deteriorates, and the amount and variety of proteins in bone is altered.
Osteoporosis is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a bone mineral density that is 2.5 standard deviations or more below the mean peak bone mass.
After the age of 40, hormones in a woman’s blood keeps dropping steadily till her menopause. This is when the bone mineral density drops sharply. She then becomes prone to fractures. Hence, the bone mineral density has to be assessed annually and appropriate treatment is to be given.
